The true long term fallout from the World Cup is yet to be seen. In addition to playing host to the Cup in 2014, Brazil also hosted the 2016 Olympics. With the games came more spending, and in turn, a whole new laundry list of corruption allegations and scandals. In general, events such as these have shown to be beneficial in the long term for developing nations because they help to speed up infrastructure development, and they force those in the government to adjust to managing large scale projects and crowds. However, never before has a country spent this much on a World Cup, and therefore Brazil may well turn out to be the exception to this. The lack of development in areas that needed it the most, as well as the massive corruption scandals may overshadow any kind of positive kickbacks.
